Beginner's Guide
If you want to get started playing ranks this is the guide for you, it will briefly explain the most basic parts of the game needed to get started playing.
The whole game is really simple and everything you need to get started is an irc-client, like mIRC. #ranks is located on the IRCnet-network. If you don't have an irc-client installed and just want to check out the IRC-channel the easiest way is joining #ranks with Webchat.
When you get on the channel it is time to start playing the game. Our bot MACHINE[] asks questions like for instance 5+7 and your task is simply to send the answer to the question as a private message to MACHINE[] as fast as possible. The faster you answer the more points you get, simple, isn't it? A question could look for instance like this:

In this case you would then message MACHINE[] 7, like this: /msg MACHINE[] 7
There are four different types of scoring. The above is an example of a "normal scoring" and is worth max 1000pts. The other types are Quick-Round (worth 500pts), Bonus (worth 5.000pts) and Megabinus (worth 10.000pts). Here are examples of the other types:

The time you have to answer the questions depends on the type of the scoring. A normal scoring lasts for 1000 seconds (16min 40secs), bonuses and megabinuses last for 200 seconds, while Quick-Rounds only last for 30 seconds.
You have probably realized by now that this game is about being at your computer as often as possible. This is what we call nolif0rness :). But of course the players aren't always glaring at their IRC-clients waiting for scoring, they use hilights which plays some sound to notify them of scorings. You can read more about how to do this in the Hilight-guide.
The most important commands that you can use in the irc-channel are:
!mystats - shows how much points you have gathered, your overallposition and rank
!scorers - shows the 10 fastest players of the last scoring
!isalive - sends a message to you in private telling if there is a scoring going on right now. Use this when for instance when joining #ranks
There's a bunch of other important, and unimportant commands, but these should be enough to get you started. If you want to check out all of the commands you can check the Commands guide.
And finally: No you are NOT allowed to make scripts that answers the questions for you! We know that it is very easy to make such scripts, but please don't. You can't win any money in this game, you will just ruin our fun.
